Since construction began in summer 2024, a total of 6 community engagement events has been delivered to bring in local stakeholders and share the purpose behind the project.
With the Solihull energy network being focused on building a future-proof energy solution, educational initiatives at local schools and colleges have been geared towards engaging the next generation. From guided site tours to interactive stands at educational and careers fairs, and tailored climate education sessions for both primary and secondary pupils, we’ve created opportunities for students to see, ask, and learn.
From the outset, £2.9m was committed to local contractors, a target which has now been exceeded, to help drive investment and boost the local economy across Solihull and the region. Local construction company, Excalon Solihull, has played a crucial role in the installation of the district heating on the project.
This approach has created job opportunities, and enabled workers living in and around the Solihull town centre, to contribute to a pioneering, low carbon mission.
Restoring and enhancing the environment in Solihull town centre has been a hands-on effort, driven by the commitment to give back to the community. The project team has actively contributed to improving local leisure spaces, taking part in litter picking and landscaping at Tudor Grange Leisure Centre.
During Christmas 2024, we partnered with Match My Project and the Solihull-based charity, The Children’s Storehouse, to take part in an important, seasonal campaign to bring warmth and comfort to children and their families during the festive season and the colder winter months.
Our team, and the wider community, collected new and gently used winter coats, jumpers, and warm clothing. Items were carefully delivered to the charity and distributed to those who needed them most. This successful campaign has led to an ongoing partnership with the local charity, working with them on their campaign again this year.
The Solihull Low Carbon Energy project is about more than just delivering low carbon energy to the town; it’s about inspiring future generations to embrace the importance of protecting our planet.
